The Health Savings Account (HSA) section of TurboTax includes information about distributions from your HSA as well as contributions to the HSA.
Use the following steps to go to that section of your return:
I am having this same issue. TT will not prompt me to enter the amount I personally contributed. I have tried to revisit the form several times.
Annette unfortunately this does not work. I vaguely recall that it does this the FIRST time you enter your HSA information, it will ask for that personal contribution, but every time you go back to it that question is not there. So if you skipped over it or missed it the first time, you are stuck and can never enter it again. This is a bug in TurboTax, and if it is not fixed soon, I'll be forced to use a different tax package.
Please share which versions of TurboTax you are using that are not allowing you to revisit the HSA personal contribution field. I have tested this using both TurboTax Online and a CD/installed version and cannot duplicate the experience you described.
I am using Turbo Tax Online 2025 - Deluxe
All of my other tax information has already been entered and ready to file besides this issue.
When I revisit my deductions and credits section I am prompted as follows:
My results are the same as wewers34, I'm using the online version. And if you look at the HSA Summary, there is no line for "employee contribution". Annette, when you test, you need to enter the HSA info first without any extra employee contribution (you may see a field for it the first time), then try to go back a subsequent time to enter that info.
See dialogs with no mention of employee contribution outside the W2; I don't mind if people see my HSA distribution figures.
In TurboTax online, if you click Deductions & Credits on the left side menu bar (under Federal), you will get a screen titled "Got it. Let's get some more info about these additional tax breaks". Scroll down to HSA, MSA Contributions and click on Start or Edit. The first screen will be to check which health savings accounts you (and your spouse) had. The next screen asks about use of your HSA for paying anything - click yes or no as appropriate.
After you enter your 1099-SA information the next screen will say "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contributions. The top box will have the amount of the contributions listed on your W-2. On the box below that you will enter the contributions that you made that were not through your employer. For instance, if you only made contributions to your HSA through payroll deduction, that amount will be included in the top box and the bottom box should remain blank.
Once you click through the screens, there will be a screen called "Your HSA Summary". If you entered information in the box for contributions outside of the employer, you will see at line at the top called "Deduction" with that contribution amount listed for it.
Hi Roger,
Thanks for taking a look at this. I tried it again and I still do not get that prompt. The screen immediately after my 1099-SA is: "Was [Name] covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) in 2025?"
I also have the same issue. I dont have any HSA contributions from a W-2, only directly to the HSA account. I have never received a prompt to enter my contributions, only to enter the 1099-SA info. It then asks me what type of coverage I had (self for entire year checked) and then goes to HSA summary with 0 deduction. I am using online premium TT version
As a side note, I tried adding a bogus W-2 in with an employer HSA contribution to see if that would make the other contribution prompt to appear under the deductions section. No Luck. Never prompted
You need to delete the corresponding forms using the tools on the left side and then it will prompt you.
This worked for me. Thanks!
Hello, it appears in the chat that others are having the same issue as I. I cannot find a prompt to enter employee contributions to the HSA. I have tried about 20 times. I do not get a question in the 1099-SA, HSA section asking about additional contributions. I am using the Desktop version.
As an additional issue, I am very frustrated by the inability to add college room and board expenses. I appreciate any help or timing on software updates.
Thank you,
