You will only need to check this box if you are applying for a tax credit or deduction in which your U.S. residency is a qualifying criteria, such as the Earned Income Credit (EIC). Are you receiving an error message in the software regarding that box being checked and/or your eligibility for certain tax benefits?
If so, you may need to check your inputs for interview questions in the Tax Home > Federal > Deductions & Credits menu screens that pertain to credits which have a minimum U.S. residency requirement, such as the EIC.
The IRS 2025 1040 and 1040-SR instructions What's New section (on page 6) helps explain the specific usage of that question box and when it is applicable to be used:
Main home was in the U.S.
If your main home (and spouse if filing a joint
return) was in the U.S. for over half of
2025, check the box on the front of
Form 1040 or 1040-SR. Providing this
information will help the IRS determine
your eligibility for certain tax benefits,
including the earned income credit.
IRS instructions don't mentioned that is ONLY for EIC, it says for other credits as well:
"2025 Residency
If your main home, and your spouse’s if filing a joint return, was in the United States for more than half of 2025, check the box. Answering this question will help the IRS determine your eligibility for certain tax benefits, including the earned income credit."
The check box on the 1040 for your home being in the United States is specifically for the Earned Income Credit.
See IRS guidance on The EIC checkbox
Thanks for the clarification and link. The checkbox on the form doesn't indicate it's only for EIC, though. The IRS instructions you linked to clarify the intent of the box, but the form doesn't, and anyone seeing that box on the form would expect they need to check it of they own a home in the US. It's frustrating that the form doesn't allow that, since it looks like a required input.
what about if i am claiming the education credit with my 1098T form? if that box is not checked, will it affect my return? is this the reason for the delay im currently experiencing?
It is not required that your home be in the US for more than half of the year in order to qualify for education credits and the absence of a checkmark in the box will not delay processing of a tax return. Under current tax law, only the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) requires physical presence in the United States.
However, due to the demand for this feature, TurboTax will be adding a question allowing for this indication on the tax return in an update that should begin to roll out at the end of this week through early next week.
@crystalray89
Hi, I left the box blank inadvertently and my transcript (I already filed) says Main Home in U.S. — No. What’s more, TurboTax’s chatbot says that box doesn’t exist. I am trying to find a form to amend this.
This is a known issue.
Thank you for admitting this is a bug in Turbo Tax, unlike all the other "experts" who try to pretend that users are dumb or don't understand their tax forms or IRS instructions.
Has this been resolved? We're now approaching mid-March.
I'm not sure of the timing, but we're adding a check box to be verified at the end of the filing process.
.
I am trying as well to find how to amend this any advice will be helpful
You can check the box when you do the Federal Review. You will get a screen that says, "Let's take a second look at your info".
This is a screenshot of the question as it appears in TurboTax.
That box doesn't show up in the same screen in the amend return process (or any of the screens, there's no way to get that box checked), and the 1040 that's outputted doesn't have the box checked.
