How can I claim the child Tax Credit for a newborn born in 2021? We did not received any advance payments for our newborn so we hope to get the $3,600 lump sum.

We read that we need to fill out schedule 8812 to receive the lump sum for a newborn, however, I wanted to verify this first.

Make sure you have entered your child as a dependent in My Info, and that you have entered the child's Social Security number. If your child was born in 2021make sure you said he lived with you the whole year.  There is an oddly worded question that asks if the child paid over half their own support.  Say NO to that question.

The software will put the child tax credit on line 28 of your Form 1040.

After you enter the child as a dependent, type "child tax credit" (without the quotes) in the Search box, then click the link that says "Jump to child tax credit." It will ask you a few questions. This will finish filling out Schedule 8812 and avoid errors in Smart Check or the final review.
