How can I change 2018 and 2019 returns from Itemized to standard deductions?

Turbotax online amendment questions do not allow for this change.

Please try this:

Go to Tools > Topic List > Expand All > Deductions (scroll all the way down) > Itemize Deductions. Click on it and it should ask you if you want to change from standard to itemized.

The above instructions do not and can not apply to your 2018 tax return. No way. No how. So how you amend your 2018 return depends on how you prepared and filed it. Did you use the online version of Turbotax for your 2018 return? Or the CD version?

I called support and they suggested the desktop version for 2018 amendments with a followup email with links.

I was able to process the 2018 amendments Online not desktop. I purchased the Turbotax product previously when doing the 2018 taxes last year, so didn't have to repurchase the product.

If you think that the results would differ by doing it via CD/desktop, please advise. I was not able to follow the instructions given for doing the Desktop version.

Are you saying that you did an amended return for 2018 with the current Online system? That is not possible. Did you mean 2019?

If you are referring to the CD/download product, that's correct.

You have to use the CD/desktop version for 2018 to do an amended return, so I don't understand this statement.

I did both 2019 and 2018 amended return Online. I checked the paperwork with the original.

It did work.

Online prompted me for what year I was doing the amended return for. I chose 2018 and did exactly what I did for the 2019. I checked the output carefully with the original 2018 paper work. It was accurate.

It worked for me.
