For an energy-efficient vehicle tax credit

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home & Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on
  • Scroll down to Cars and Other Things You Own
  • On Energy-Efficient Vehicles, click the start or update button

Or enter energy efficient vehicle in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to energy efficient vehicle

I did do that but I get a message saying that the form needs to be updated. I’m pretty sure I know already what the tax break is but I was wondering if I could just add it manually myself

No, you cannot add the credit manually.  The Form 8936 is estimated to be available on 01/29/2020.

There is no need to file early as the IRS will not start accepting 2019 tax returns until on and after January 27.
