Hi, I need to file form 5695 (2023). What amount I should put in solar energy cost? Is that the total cost of solar system or the amount I financed the system this year?

I filed form 5695 (2022) and got a part of my full solar credit. So, I need to file Form 5695 (2023) to get a part or full of the rest credit. But, what amount do I need to put into line 1 "solar energy cost"? Is that the amount I only financed my system last year or the total cost for the installed system? Thanks

When you are in the Home Energy Credit section you do not enter the carryforward on any of the screens for cost of improvements in the current year (if you did not have any).  Continue with this section until you land on the screen that asks Do You Have a 2022 Home Energy Credit to Carry Forward?.  Select Yes and then enter the amount from your 2022 Form 5695 Line 16.

Additionally -

The Form 5695 Residential Energy Credits for tax year 2023 has not yet been finalized in TurboTax.

The Form 5695 is scheduled to be available in TurboTax on 01/31/2024 (subject to change).

Go to his TurboTax website for forms availability - https://form-status.app.intuit.com/tax-forms-availability/formsavailability?albRedirect=true&product...

Oh, thanks so much for your reply. So, I'll wait until Jan 31st. But, I'm still confused that what amount I put in box "solar electric costs" for 2023. Is that amount of whole solar system ($30,004) or the amount I financed during last year (around $2,700)?

Thanks.

If you bought the system in 2022, then you would not enter anything in that section.  That is the costs for 2023 only.  On the next screen it will ask if you had a carryforward from 2022.  That is where you will enter the amount that you have left over from the credit from 2022.

Your payments you make during the year do not play a role in your return at all.  The full amount you pay for the system is entered in the year you install it and then from then on out it is only the credit that is left over that is entered on future year returns until you use up the entire credit.
