Hi! I had a HSA in 2016 but did not have a HDHP. I also did not have any contribution to or distribution from my HSA in 2016. Do I need any extra forms with my 1040?

May I assume that you had an HSA from a previous job when you did have an HDHP (or the insurance coverage on your current job changed so that your insurance was changed to something other than an HDHP)?

You are required to file form 8889 only if you:

  • made a contribution in 2016,
  • took a distribution in 2016, or
  • inherited the HSA during 2016

If none of these apply, then you do not need to file the 8889 for 2016.

Of course, when you eventually take the money out, you at that point will have to file the 8889. And so long as you do not have an HDHP, as you probably know, you can't contribute to the HSA.
