Hi, I am being asked by my mortgage underwriter why my return did not include a "Schedule E" and only included a Form 6198 w/r/t a K-1 from employer.

From what you describe, you should have a schedule E included with your return.

A schedule E would be used to either report rental income and expenses or your interest in an S corporation or partnership. If you had either one of those in that year, you should have a schedule E.

Form 6198 reports at-risk limits in a business entity that you own. Schedule K-1 reports your share of income or loss from a partnership or S corporation. It gets reported on page two of schedule E. The fact that you have a Form 6198 would indicate that you have an ownership interest in a company and the K-1 would indicate that it was a partnership or S Corporation. The K-1 form gets reported on page 2 of schedule E, so since you have a Schedule K-1, you should have completed a Schedule E.

Thank you. Makes sense to me but the return that I downloaded from turbotax does not look like it contains a form called Schedule E. I submitted the K-1 to turbotax, and they submitted this return which was accepted by IRS. Do you know why this would be? I do not have liability for my employers gain/loss so there was no impact to my tax liability. Thank you

If you entered a K1 showing your ownership share in a partnership or S Corporation then the system should have generated a schedule E page 2 for your tax return.  Unless the K1 was all zeroes.  If no schedule E was generated then you should review your tax return and the K1 entries to make sure that they were entered properly at the time.  It may be a good idea to consult with a tax professional.
