Hey Turbo Team, Why am I not able to edit my HSA contribution? I have inputted the amount I have contributed as individual for 2025 but it doesn’t allow me to edit.

I want to test adding more to bring down taxes owed. It appears to be a bug on their site. I also tested with phone app and same thing.

Be sure that you are trying to edit the box that shows Contributions you personally made (not through your employer)

The amount of Health Savings Account (HSA) contributions reported on your W-2 and made through your employee cannot be edited in the HSA section of the return.

Use these steps to go to that box to test the different amounts:

  • Go to the Deductions & Credits section
  • Scroll down to the HSA, MSA section
  • Click Start or Update
  • Be sure to check the box that you have an HSA account
  • Go through the screens asking about receiving Form 1099-SA reporting distributions
  • Next, you will be asked about  contributions  that were made to your HSA, either by you or through payroll deductions.  (This box is just below the amount that was reported on your W-2 in box 12 with code W)

This is not working for me and it's starting to drive me crazy! I even deleted my HSA documents entirely, but when I started the interview again, I wasn't asked about contributions, and it carried forward an incorrect amount I previously entered. I've used TurboTax for years and never had this happen. Something is wrong: I'm not being reprompted to enter my personal HSA contributions. I also can't find a granular way to delete the amount from Box 13 of Form 1040 (from form 8889).

Just to add: your entire HSA area is messed up. I should not be getting asked about my plan each month if I just stated it didn't change all year. I'm also keep being asked about 2024 on that screen, when it should indicate 2025.

Please tell me what version of TurboTax you are using: (Online, Desktop/Windows, or Desktop/Mac), and if Desktop (either one), have you updated recently.

At the screen Select the health-related accounts you had in 2025, make sure that Health Savings Account is selected for both taxpayers.

In TurboTax Online, return to HSA contributions as follows:

  1. Down the left side of the screen, click on Federal.
  2. Down the left side of the screen, click on Deductions and credits.
  3. Click the down arrow to the right of Medical.
  4. Click to the right of HSA, MSA Contributions.
  5. Be sure to check the box that you have an HSA account.
  6. At the screen Let's enter your HSA contributions, the second entry box allows you to report contributions personally made.

I have the same problem except I was never prompted for individual contributions. When I go in under deductions it just keeps showing my 1099-SA. I cannot enter my individual contributions anywhere.

When you go into the HSA interview (Deductions & Credit->Medical->HSA, MSA, 1099-SA), as you proceed through the interview, you should come to a screen titled "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contributions".

You enter your "personal" contributions on the second line (the first line is the code W amount from your W-2 and cannot be changed here).

This year, because of the dynamic nature of the interview screens, some taxpayers did not see this contributions screen. What has worked for them is to do the HSA Reset to delete all their HSA data and restart the HSA interview from scratch. Let us know how it goes for you.

HSA RESET

***Reset***

1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies)

2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)

*** Desktop/Windows***

3. Go to the upper right and click on Forms, and

4. Select the desired form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)). Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the form’s screen.

*** Desktop/Mac***

3. Switch to Forms Mode by selecting the Forms icon.

4. From the menu, select the form (1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)) you want to remove (if you don't see it, select Open Form at the top). From the Forms menu, select Remove [form name].

*** Online ***

3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form

4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)

5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually

6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview....

I tried these steps (in TurboTax Online) and it didn’t work. I was never prompted to enter my contributions. I get a summery at the end and that has my employer contributions and it says I can edit it, but there is no way to edit it.

You can add your individual HSA contributions into TurboTax that were not reflected on your W-2 as follows:

  1. Click on Search at the top right of your TurboTax screen
  2. Type HSA in the search box
  3. Click on the link that says Jump to HSA
  4. Follow your TurboTax screens until you see the screen that says screen
  5. In the box that says Contributions that XXX made (not through your employer) enter the amount of your personal HSA contributions
  6. This should properly record your personal HSA contributions.
  7.  Answer all follow-up screens.

Hey Turbo Team, Why am I not able to edit my HSA contribution? I have inputted the amount I have contributed as individual for 2025 but it doesn’t allow me to edit.

After several searches and a 40 minute phone call with Intuit, this DOES NOT WORK. There is simply a fluke in the system. You will need to delete your return and start over. Do this by navigating to "Switch Products" and clicking on the carrot, and selecting, "Clear & start over". On MacOS this is on the lefthand side of the screen, towards the bottom, just under "Tax tools". Good luck.

Does starting over actually work? I never saw the option to enter my contributions and am afraid I am going to spend another day redoing my return just to end up in the same place. No matter what, when I try to enter contributions it keeps taking me back to the distribution page.I am using TurboTax online.

Hey Turbo Team, Why am I not able to edit my HSA contribution? I have inputted the amount I have contributed as individual for 2025 but it doesn’t allow me to edit.

There's several parts to the HSA section.  First, you indicate what type of account(s) you have.  Then enter your 1099-SA (if you have one).  Then, enter your own personal contributions, then give info on your HDHP plan (required for HSA).  If you don't go through all the parts, your HSA may not calculate correctly. You can't Edit your employer contributions; it's filled in automatically from your W-2.

If you don't want to start over, you could try deleting Form(s) 8889 from your return.  Here's How to Delete Forms in TurboTax Online.  If you imported your W-2, you could delete that and re-enter it manually.  In TurboTax Online, after deleting, clear your Cache and Cookies before re-entering.
