Help getting children tax credit

You may get up to $1,000 child tax credit for each qualifying child (dependent under the age of 17), also if your income meets the requirement.

In 2017, the phase out threshold is $55,000 for married couples filing separately; $75,000 for single, head of household, and qualifying widow or widower filers; and $110,000 for married couples filing jointly. For each $1,000 of income above the threshold, your available child tax credit is reduced by $50.

To qualify for the Child Tax Credit in 2017, your child must fill all of these requirements:

  • Be born on or after January 1, 2001
  • Be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, adopted child, brother, sister, stepbrother, stepsister, half-brother, half-sister, or a descendant of any of them (for example, a grandchild or niece/nephew)
  • Have their own Social Security or Individual Tax Identification number (ITIN)
  • Have lived with you for more than half the year
  • Not pay more than half their own expenses
  • Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. resident alien (being a resident of Canada or Mexico does not qualify)

When you enter the dependent information, TurboTax will ask the right questions for you to get the child tax credit.
