Head of Household - not claiming dependent.

Me and my girlfriend live together with our one child, so he’s lived with both of us the entire year. We agreed that she would claim him as a dependent. I pay all rent, utilities etc and Turbo tax recommended I file as head of household and her as single.

is this correct?

No, it sounds like you have entered the child's name on both returns - which you can't do.  Your child's social security number should go on only 1 return, either yours or hers.  Only the person that claims your child can be head of household.

Does your girlfriend have income to file a tax return for?  If not, you may be able to claim both of them and be head of household.  If she does have income, you will need to test out each scenario an choose the one the is financially best for your family:

  1. You claim the kid and head of household and she files single OR
  2. She claims the kid and head of household and you file single.

So if she’s claiming him I shouldn’t put him on my tax information at all?

Correct!  If you do, expect rejections and delays.  The questions in that section can be confusing for parents that live together.  But as long as the kid is only on one return, you should have no problems.
