In the interview for the Home Energy Credit, did you indicate YES that the improvements were 'made to your main home?' You may want to step through the section to check.
Or, in FORMS, there's a checkbox on Form 5695 to indicate this.

I did put in the main residence I live in and said it was my primary home. I also listed the two other homes that I own and also where I made improvements on as well as listing them as rental.
This is where I am seeing the problem:
But it errors out when submitting the tax returns.
The Home Energy Credit is only for improvements to your main residence.
Any energy improvements made to rental homes can be entered as a Rental Asset, and either claimed in full as an expense (depending the the cost) or depreciated over the years. You add the cost to the Basis of the property to reduce capital gain when you sell.
I did the information under the rental. I will remove the updates on that portion.
The other is a second home. Does that count?
Yes, you can deduct certain energy improvements on a second home for the 2025 tax year, but eligibility depends strictly on the type of improvement and whether you rent out the property.
Here's more info from the IRS on Residential Clean Energy Credits.
Perfect!
I fixed the double counting of the heat pump/AC/gas furnace replacement equipment from the Home Energy
that would have been a disaster.
Thank you
@MarilynG1 I'm having the same issue. Only one home (no rentals). Form 5695 Part 1 "Check to use address. . . " is X'd. Under 17d no matter what I enter it just erases it. With or without the "Check to use address. . . " X'd in 17d.
I wonder if making earlier changes to Form 5695 has something 'stuck' in TurboTax. Since we can't see your return in this forum, I'd advise deleting Form 5695 and stepping through the interview from beginning to end to let it repopulate.
In my test return, when I check the box, the address on my return fills in automatically. I'm sure you've probably used the ONLINE link to update your program, but here's how you can do a Manual Update after deleting Form 5695.
Thanks for the reply! I deleted form 5695 and re-stepped through the interview - same problem.
I then deleted form 5695, closed Turbo Tax, installed the manual update, filled out the form again - same problem. Any other suggestions? @MarilynG1
I was able to resolve the issue. I had to delete form 5695 and all other related forms. Then I just completed it in forms view instead of step-by-step. It let me populate the address field. Moving on. . .
The solution doesn't work for me. I tried checking the Federal Information box, the address appeared. However, when I ran the smart check again, the address was blank again and the form was flagged for error.
The software keeps asking me for the address info over and over and doesn't enter it. No matter whether the FI box is checked or not, the address info disappears and the smart check flags the error.
I am using the Costco version of TurboTax Deluxe Desktop. Thanks for any help you can give me.
Did you try deleting the form and completing a new one in forms view?
If this is the only error you get in Smart Check, could you try checking the Address box on Form 5695, skipping the Smart Check, and going directly to Efile? It seems something in the Smart Check is flipping the box info.
I installed the manual update, reloaded the form, checked the box, skipped the smart check (which seems to happen automatically since I received the error again), asked to submit, paid all the fees, and now I get the message that I cannot e-file because of the error. The PDF of the form looks OK
