If you have a 1098 for your home mortgage, the property taxes paid (if listed on the 1098) would be on that property, so your main home.
"Not on principal residence" would be for a vacation house or vacant land.
If you only have one house, enter the full amount of property taxes paid and made no adjustment for "Not on principal residence".
from what box do i fill in from the 1098, box one? box 10?
I left the second one alone and it always stops me from proceeding like it needs an answer....
Form 1098 is for reporting Home Mortgage Interest you paid the lender, such as a bank.
The amount of interest you paid for the year is listed in Box 1.
Your Lender (or bank) sends a copy of the 1098 to you and a copy to the IRS.
SOMETIMES they also report the property tax they paid on your behalf if you "escrow" your tax payments with the lender (if your mortgage payment includes property tax). Sometimes Lenders have their clients send in extra money to cover property taxes and even insurance, and some Lenders only collect the mortgage principal and interest.
If your Lender also collects property tax from you, it is USUALLY listed in Box 10.
but after entering either box 1 or 10 and leaving the "amount NOT paid" section at 0 it will not let me proceed. This is my only residence. Ive never had an issue before
property taxes are escrowed....
Understand. There are two options to enter property taxes paid. The first option is when entering a form 1098 that shows property taxes paid out of escrow in the tax year in box 10. You would enter the box 10 amount in TurboTax when entering the form 1098 in the box labeled "Property taxes". That amount will also populate the "Property taxes" topic automatically.
Should the form 1098 not include an amount in box 10 or you paid more property taxes than indicated there (for example you have another property with no mortgage thus no 1098), you can enter those property taxes using the "Property Taxes" topic in the "Your Home" dropdown menu.
You'll see any property taxes already entered from the forms 1098 and you will have the option to enter "Additional property taxes paid on your main home" or to enter "Property taxes paid on additional properties." None of the amounts should be duplicated.
