Federal Income Tax Withholding

Is it listed on a W-2 or 1099 form, or did you make estimated tax payments yourself?

Federal Income Tax Withholding

If taxes were withheld and reported on a tax document, then you would enter the withheld amount in the same section of your return that you enter that tax document.  For example, taxes withheld and reported on Form 1099-R are entered when you enter your Form 1099-R.

If you have other withholdings to report that were not shown on another tax document, use the following steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “other withholding” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to other withholding
  • Click on the blue “Jump to other withholding” link
  • Scroll down to Other Income Taxes Paid in 2020
  • Click Start beside Withholding not already entered on a W-2 or 1099 to enter your information

If you made estimated quarterly payments, use these steps to enter your estimated payments:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “estimated tax payments” and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to estimated tax payments
  • Click on the blue “Jump to estimated tax payments” link
