how can we apply the energy star hvac appliance credit to this years 2016 taxes

I'm not 100% positive but I believe you should:

choose Federal Taxes

choose Deductions and Credits

choose Start or Update for Home Energy Credits

It says you can't claim Energy Star appliances, but I've seen other documentation that says you can. Click on Yes, then Continue

Answer 3 questions about your home

Enter what you paid for your central AC in the Energy-Efficient Building Property box and click continue

FYI The IRS Form 5695 instructions says your hvac system qualifies if it is "A central air conditioner that achieves the highest efficiency tier that has been established by the CEE as in effect on January 1, 2009."
