Does anyone know if I can deduct tuition as a work related expense if my new job required me to acquire this higher degree within 3 yrs of hire?

You can. But work it through both ways to see which gives you the better tax break. For most, working it through the education section (if you qualify to do so) gives the better tax breaks.
