Do you have to file taxes if you made less then the standard deduction?

Made 2200.00 for the year on a 1099 misc, filing single, no deductions....it is less than the standard deduction and turbo tax deluxe is show a tax owed of 300. how is that possible?

Generally, you don't have to file taxes if you made less income than the standard deductions, but there are exceptions to this.

TurboTax may be considering your Form 1099 income to be self-employment type income, if you received a 1099-MISC or a 1099-K.  If so, this would generate roughly $300 in self-employment tax.  Please see the TurboTax FAQs below for more information.
