Do I need to report the sale of my home?

I am filing jointly, lived in my home 22 yrs and made less than $500,000 on the sale. I did not receive any tax forms on the sale of the home. Do I need to report this on my taxes. If so, what do I report if I did not receive any tax forms?

Do I need to report the sale of my home?

No, if you are not required to report it, you may skip that portion.

You do not need to enter the sale of your primary residence if:

  • You never used your primary residence as a rental
  • You have a loss on the sale of your home (Personal use capital losses are not reported on your tax return)
  • You did not receive a Form 1099-S and
  • You meet the home gain exclusion
