Do I have to pay back 1st time home buyer credit all at once when I sell my home?

Possibly. If you received the credit for a home purchased in 2008 and the home stops being your main home, you may need to add the entire remaining unpaid credit amount to your income tax on your next tax return.

Enter the information in TurboTax and it will guide you and let you know if you must pay back the entire amount or if you qualify for any exemptions.

To enter the First Time Homebuyer's Credit:

  1. Click on "Federal Taxes"
  2. Go to "Deductions & Credits
  3. Scroll down to "Your Home" click "show More" to the right
  4. Click on "Start" next to "Homebuyer Credit Repayment"
