Do I file taxes if I do not work, but own a home? My fiance works and pays for the bills and taxes but is not on title of the home. How do I file?

Do I still file taxes to show the taxes paid on our home this year? Or am I going to get hit because I am showing a bill paid but I do not work..so I don't have income?

If you had no taxable income then you have no reason to file a tax return.   Owning a home does not require you to file a tax return.   You would only file if you were trying to use a deduction for the interest or property tax you paid for the house in order to seek a refund of tax that had been withheld from your income.  You had no tax withheld from any income, nor did you pay for anything.

Your next question may be: can my fiancé claim the mortgage interest and real estate tax deductions. since he/she pays it?

Answer: No, since he's not on the deed or mortgage.

You have to meet the rules, which are:

  1. You are legally obligated to pay it
  2. You actually pay it.
