for 2020 you claim only those paid in 2020 but exclude those paid from your HSA. say you paid a bill with some of your HSA money and the balance with personal funds. the amount paid with personal funds is deductible.
You can only claim medical expenses paid out of pocket, outside of your HSA.
When 2020 TurboTax asks you to enter the medical expenses that you paid in 2020, you must include the expenses paid with distributions from the HSA. TurboTax then automatically subtracts from these the amount paid with distributions from the HSA to determine the amount to include on Schedule A line 1.
Expenses paid from an HSA are not deductible. However, because of the way TurboTax works, if you want to list other medical expense deductions, then you must list all of your medical expenses including the ones paid from the HSA, and TurboTax will make the subtraction. If you don’t enter the expenses, TurboTax will still do the subtraction and will reduce your other eligible deductions.
