If your expenses were more than your income from a trade or business in which you materially participated, then you could have a net operating loss (NOL).

you may have a loss from your self-employment. but that doesn't mean you have an NOL. you can have nonbusiness income which could more than offset the business loss. we can't see your return but here's a general rule
you have a NOL if current-year business losses exceed current year business income reduced by the excess if any, of current year nonbusiness income over current year nonbusines deductions.
it is also likely that adjusted gross income is negative after adding back any capital loss deduction.
