Do both spouses need to be 65 to claim senior tax deduction?

Married Filed Jointly. One spouse is 65, the other is 64. Can one spouse claim the $6k deduction on the MFJ return? Turbo tax is saying no, google is saying yes..

No,  If one partner is 65+ you can get up to $6,000 as a deduction.

  • This is automatically  calculated from the birthday you entered in My Info.
  • It is not included in the Standard deduction box 12a
  • It is posted to box 13b
    • This may include other deductions that are calculated on Schedule 1A

@sandtoes91

though..it is a NO if the spouses are filing separately  (MFS)

as long as you are filing joint (MFJ), either spouse aged at least 65 during 2025, can get it.

But it does phase out when AGI exceeds $150,000 for a MFJ couple.
