You would have to answer that yes, since you did acquire virtual currency.

Once i selected "yes", it is now asking me to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe, saying the free version "doesn't cover additional required forms attached to the new 1040". What are these forms that are required?

If you bought, sold or exchanged virtual currencies in 2019, you need to file Schedule 1 of form 1040 as the question on virtual currencies is on that Schedule.

Schedule 1 is only supported by TurboTax Deluxe and above,
