dependents and MediCAL

We support our adult daughter with housing and money because of medical issues.  We have not claimed her in the past because she receives MediCAL for full medical coverage with Kaiser.  Can we claim her as a dependent for the tax credit without jeopardizing her MediCal?

dependents and MediCAL

call MediCal I have no idea if claiming them as a dependent would affect MediCal.

but first determine if you can claim them as a dependent.

you can claim them as a qualifying child if all these tests are met
• they have the same principal abode as you for more than ½ the tax year. Temporary absences like for school are ignored
• if they are not a full-time student, they're under 19 at the end of the tax year. If a full-time student, they're under 24 at the end of the tax year.
• they haven’t provided over ½ their own support
• they didn't file a joint return unless there was no tax liability but merely filing joint to facilitate refund of taxes withheld or estimates paid

or you can claim them as a qualifying relative if all these tests are met
• their gross income for 2022 is less than $4,400
• you provided over ½ their support
• they aren't a qualifying child of another taxpayer

dependents and MediCAL

Thanks for the information.  She does meet all the criteria, but she is 40 years old.  She is living rent free in our second home (1-bedroom condo), and we provide over 50% of her financial needs.  She is single, lives with a girlfriend (who also lives rent free), earns less than $4,000, etc.   I think she meets the criteria of an adult dependent, but we do not want to jeopardize the MediCAL coverage.

@ctw1 You have to check with MediCal.   You do realize, though, that all you get for claiming an adult for 2022 is the $500 credit for other dependents?
