Dependent Care Benefits on W-2

Why is Turbo Tax giving a credit on Form 2441 when there is an entry in Box 10 for dependent care benefits?  If you don't enter how much you paid for each dependent, the return shows an error.  I was able to bypass this since i paid more in dependent care than the $5,000 on my w-2 by just entering the amount over the $5,000 actually paid for care.  However, if i had only paid $5,000 and put $2,500 as the amount paid for each dependent, it would take a credit for the whole $5,000.

Is this a software error?

The credit limit for 2022 is $3000 per dependent and $6000 when you have two dependents.

You already received some tax benefit by putting $5,000 into your Dependent Care FSA. That amount is pre-tax contribution.

You have $1,000 in excess expenses to calculate your credit  ($6000-$5000= $1000).

Thank you. I understand that, but how do you enter it in the software?

You will enter the full amount you paid for each dependent's care in TurboTax. You do not adjust this amount.

You are accounting for the amount in your FSA that was used for dependent care, as well as determining if you have additional care paid that would qualify you for the dependent care credit.

It sounds like you have 2 dependents, which would allow you to use up to $6000 of qualified expense. Also from what you say, it sounds like you spent more than $6000 total in dependent care. You had $5000 used in your FSA, so you still have $1000 to use toward the dependent care credit.
