Deduction for health insurance premiums for public safety

It is my understanding that as retired public safety officers, we can deduct up to $3,000 each year for health insurance premiums whether taken directly from our pension payment or personally paid.  Can you tell me.

Deduction for health insurance premiums for public safety

That is correct, if deducted directly from the retirement.   After you enter a 1099R for the retirement, TurboTax will ask if you are a public Safety and compute the deduction for you.

For your health insurance premiums to qualify, they must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Cover health, accident or long-term care insurance, and
  • Provide coverage for you, your spouse or your dependents, and
  • Be automatically deducted from your monthly retirement benefit and sent directly to your insurance provider by DRS.
