As long as the property tax was paid in 2017, it can be deducted on your 2017 tax return. It does not matter what year the tax bill represented.
You can include it on your return in a couple of different ways. If it was paid through your mortgage company, it is likely that it will be included with the amount shown on your 1098. If it was paid separately by you, then the mortgage information probably won’t include the amount.
You can either add it to the amount reported on the 1098 or use the steps below to show that it was an Additional Property Tax paid on your main home. The important thing is to be sure to claim the amount only one time.
