Colorado State Return is not including data on Tax Exempt Dividends in outer states into Add back into Colorado Return

I am filing Fed and Colorado state taxes. Fed return input I gave shows two 1099-DIVs with tax-exempt dividends. For each 1099-DIV, I click on the "I earned exempt-interest dividends in more than one state"  radio button. For each I gave the amount of tax-exempt income from CO bonds and the amount from "Multiple States" .  TT should add back into the CO return the sum of both of the "Multiple States" interest numbers. However, even though I have revisited the input several times to insure it is correct, it is only catching one of the two 1099-DIV data.

I am assuming this is a pilot error, but all the input looks correct, and the initial 1099-DIV data for both was downloaded directly from Fidelity. There are no errors in the 1099-DIV data from Fidelity as I verified all the entries.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

Thanks.

You are using the desktop version. You can go into Forms mode and make the necessary corrections. If you need to override something, go back through step by step and it should pick it up so you can cancel the override.

Either way, you can definitely get your tax forms correct using the Forms mode. You can print and mail or you may be able to e-file. See Can I e-file my amended state return?

A full or corrupted cache can cause problems in TurboTax, sometimes you need to clear your cache (that is, remove these temporary files). You may need to delete the form that isn't showing correctly. See How to Delete

Online version

  1. Log out of your return and try one or more of the following:
    • Don't use Internet Explorer.
    • Clear cache and cookies,
    • Sign in using a different browser.
    • Sign in using a different device.
  2. Log back into your return.
    • See if the form is carrying correctly. If not delete the bad form and go through the steps again. Enter the DIV information again.

Desktop version:

  1. Save your return while closing the program.
  2. Update the program
  3. Open
  4. See if the form is carrying correctly. If not delete the bad form and go through the steps again. Enter the DIV information again.

Colorado State Return is not including data on Tax Exempt Dividends in outer states into Add back into Colorado Return

The issue I have now is that I filed the CO state return with the error in it (I assumed TT worked correctly and did not examine the add backs to income). So I need to amend my return.

However, the procedure you outlined did not work.

Desktop version:

Save your return while closing the program.

I saved return, closed the program.

Update the program

Done.

Open

I opened the return, renamed it to a new version, then entered the State Return section.

See if the form is carrying correctly. If not delete the bad form and go through the steps again. Enter the DIV information again.

I assume you meant to delete the 1099-DIV. I did and then re-entered it manually. Saved the return.  I then visited the "Amend a tax  return" section of the CO State return. I input the amount of my return with the filed return in the step by step method, and then viewed the CO 104X that is represented in TT. Still no change in the addition to income for the Tax Exempt Dividends in other states.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, Amy for your time.

Prior to your reply, I ended up contacting TT support. After 2 different phone calls, and 2 hours on the phone with them, they finally concluded I needed to override the amount in the CO 104X amended form as you suggested. However, I am not experienced in that function, so the rep guided me through the right click on the box at issue on the 104X and then select override.  Although I do not know why this error occurred in TT,  I have a correct amended return now!

Thanks!
