My college student claimed herself on the 1040. when our CPA tried to file our taxes, he received a notice that our daughter claimed herself. He says she needs to file a 1040X. I am unsure how to help her correct the problem. Does she need to uncheck the box for filing status single? I can't get a straight answer from my CPA on how to fix the problem and I can't get ahold of anyone with the IRs to answer my question. When I did get in touch with someone at the IRS the person was no help. I can't correct what I don't know how to fix.

@kandksmom2 - if you review your daughter's tax return (See @VolvoGirl screenshot),
.....and the box is NOT checked, then you know what to amend on the 1040X. Depending on her income it may have other impacts. Your tax return will need to be paper filed; her 1040X may be able to be efiled depending on the software she used to file in the 1st place.
if the box IS checked, then simply paper file your own return; nothing to do on your daugter's tax return. There is a glitch somewhere, but I don't see that trying to figure it out is worth it.
she needs to CHECK the box that states "I can be claimed by someone else".
depending on her income for 2021, that may be the only change required....
Can't your CPA create and file the 1040X for your child?
she did check the box that says you as a dependent, So I am thinking there is a glitch error on the part of the IRS
Did she use Turbo Tax Online to file her 1040? How to amend 2021
She will have to check this box under My Info
she clicked yes on that.
She should file the amended return but you will not be able to efile the 2021 return ... it must be mailed in due to this error. This is why I instruct my clients to not let their kids file their own returns before they file theirs and since I don't charge for a dependent's simple return I also encourage them to collect all the dependent's forms so I can guarantee they file correctly.
@kandksmom2 - did you personally review your daughter's tax return? I'll assume she efiled.
if everything was electronic, unlikely that it is an IRS glitch as there is no human intervention. the only human involved is your daughter as she clicked (or didn't click) the box.
Check her actual return and see what is checked on the Standard Deduction line.

the box You as a dependent is checked. Was it not supposed to be checked? I have no problem mailing it in. I just am not clear what needs to be corrected.
Well that 1040 is right. It might be an error on someone else's return. Like they entered her ssn by mistake on their return. If your efile rejected because her ssn was already used then you will have to print and mail your return this year.
Did she mail her return or efile? If she mailed it then maybe the IRS missed checking that box. Or maybe the CPA entered her ssn wrong on your return? Double check her ssn.
I will have them check her SS#. she did do an e-file thank you for all of the responses
