Claiming a child that has gotten married?

So here is my question, its kind of interesting.  Daughter had lived with us more than 6 months of the year and was a fulltime student, with us taking care of her needs.  She gets married before the end of the year.  Can we still claim  her as a dependent for that year?

Claiming a child that has gotten married?

Possibly.

Based on your question, you can claim your daughter so long as she is under 24 and does not file a joint return with her husband.

It appears that you satisfy all of the other rules, which are:

  • She is related to you.
  • She is not claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • She is  a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • She is not filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • She is under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • She lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • She didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

You can’t claim her if she files married jointly with her new husband unless  they only file to get tax withheld.
