child tax credit

Last year I received the full $2500 deduction for my two children.  This year TurboTax is only allowing $1000 and I am not sure why.  Eldest, 19 and a full-time college student and dependent, the youngest was 17 at the end of 2020, but is still in school and a dependent.  Have they simply "aged-out" of the credit?

child tax credit

Yes, unfortunately, they have aged out and no longer qualify for the Child Tax Credit.

If you have dependents who don't qualify for the Child Tax Credit, you may be able to claim the Credit for Other Dependents. The maximum credit amount is $500 for each dependent who meets certain conditions. These, include:

  • Dependents who are age 17 or older.
  • Dependents who have individual taxpayer identification numbers.
  • Dependent parents or other qualifying relatives supported by the taxpayer.
  • Dependents living with the taxpayer who aren't related to the taxpayer.
