Child tax credit why I’m not getting full amount

Assuming your children are under the age of 17, are not getting the full amount of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) for one of these two reasons:

  • Your income is too high. The CTC begins to phase out when your income reaches $110,000 for joint filers, $75,000 for Single/Head of Household/Qualifying Widow, and $55,000 for Married Filing Separate. You lose $50 for each $1000 that your income is over that threshold.
  • Your income is too low.  The CTC is a non-refundable credit so it is limited to the amount of your tax liability.  The CTC cannot reduce your tax liability below zero.  However, if you have earned income of more than $3,000, part or all of the CTC is given to you via the "Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC)".  The ACTC is 15% of your earned income over $3000.
