My son has an ITIN and I understand that I will only get $500 Tax Credit instead of $2000 as he does not have an SSN. Question is that now that the tax filing deadline is extended can I apply for his SSN now and once received I file for the returns so I get the complete $2,000 Tax Credit?

*If* you have not already filed your 2019 tax return, you can file with his new SSN before the deadline of July 15th or October 15th ( if you file extension Form 4868 ). If you have already filed, the IRS will deny a return that is amended to change from an ITIN to a SSN.

I accidentally filed the tax returns with an error in my son's ITIN which got rejected. That's when I realized that ITIN reduces the tax credit by $1,500 - Rejection was a boon in disguise. I will refile once I have the new SSN. If this changes your response let me know. Thank you again and stay safe and well.
