Child tax credit for 17 year old

Software is giving the full child tax credit for son who turned 17 in November, 2025. Should only receive the $500 credit.  Is there a fix for this glitch?

TurboTax will automatically apply the $500 Credit for Other Dependents if your dependent was age 17 or older at the end of the tax year. There are no known issues affecting the Child Tax Credit calculation. I recommend going back to My Info and reviewing your dependent’s profile to make sure the birthdate was entered correctly, as that determines which credit is applied.

It is calculating the larger tax credit despite entering the dependent’s date of birth correctly at 11/08/2008 (making him 17 at year end.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:

TurboTax Online:

  1. Sign into your online account.
  2. Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
  3. A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
  4. On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
  5. This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
  6. Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.

TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
  3. This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created.  Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
  4. Please provide the Token Number  (including the dash) that was generated in the response.

*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

I’ve taken a look at your return and I see why this caught your attention; it does look like a Child Tax Credit at first glance. The good news is everything is working as it should. There's no Child Tax Credit on your return, since your son was 17 at the end of the year.

What you’re‌ seeing is the Earned Income Credit (EIC), which is separate and still allowed based on your income. You can confirm this in Forms view, Lines 19 and 28 are $0, and the credit showing on your refund is coming from the EIC section of your Form 1040.
