Change of life tax year

Very sorry for your loss.  For the year that your spouse died, you can still file a joint return.  That way, you will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $25,100 (+ $1350 for each spouse 65 or older) which will lower the amount of income you are taxed on.

In My Info, you will need to indicate that your spouse died. When his name is in My Info,  there is a screen early in the interview that asks "Do any of these apply to [name] ?’” where you will do that, and then a drop down will appear where you can enter the date he passed.

If you have dependent children still living at home, you will be able to file as a qualified widow for the next two years after this tax return.  Post back if you need further help.

"Expenses"

Funeral expenses are not deductible.

"Everyday expenses" are not deductible.

You say you received disability income---do you mean you received Social Security disability or some other sort of disability?

If you received Social Security disability:

In January you will receive a SSA1099 from SS.

Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.

If you did not have tax withheld from your disability income or from any other source of income you received then there is nothing from which to deduct mortgage interest etc. in order to receive a refund.

Did you receive the 3rd stimulus check for $1400?   If you did not get it then you should use the recovery rebate credit to get that on a 2021 tax return.

And.....again... if you did not have tax withheld from your income then entering medical expenses etc. will have no effect on your tax return.   Refunds come from paying more tax than you owed--if you did not pay tax you do not get a refund for itemized deductions.

Did you retire?   Did you begin to receive any sort of retirement income?   If you received a pension or took money out of a retirement account in 2021 you will receive a 1099R in late January/early February.

To enter your retirement income, Go to  Federal> Wages and Income>Retirement Plans and Social

Security>IRA  401 k) Pension Plan Withdrawals to enter your 1099R.
