Caring for parents tax write offs.

I am careing for my parents are their tax write offs?? I daily drive 60+ miles to care for my parents? Both are over 80yrs old & their minds are gone & cant do basic things, cook clean baths?? If I could write off the miles on my car that would be great? Or even some time?  Anything? I am self employed from Ny moved to Florida to care for them. My parents will not let me hire anyone to help, wont let them in??  I am stuck(wrong word I love them) doing all the work for them but it is wearing on my car, finances & will become more intense as they can do less & less??  Could I write off the miles to their house each day??

Caring for parents tax write offs.

Unfortunately, no. None of this is deductible. The only possibility would be if you could claim them as dependents.

Qualifying Relative

You can claim a child, relative, friend, fiancé (etc.) as a dependent on your 2018 taxes as long as they meet all of the following requirements :

  • You provided more than half of their financial support. More info
  • They made less than $4,150 in gross income during 2018 unless they are a qualifying child.
  • They live with you or they are related to you. (Your relative must live at your residence all year or be on the list of “relatives who do not live with you” in Publication 501.)
  • They are a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • They aren't (or won't be) claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They aren’t filing a joint return with their spouse.
  • You are not being claimed as a dependent on someone else's return.
