Can you claim instructional materials and supplies on both your federal and state taxes?

I am a teacher and spent a lot of money out of pocket on my classroom in the past year. I already entered that info on my federal taxes, but it is asking me again on my state taxes. Can I claim the same amount on both?

Yes, but the amount is different. 

There is a new tax credit for Illinois teachers that allows you to deduct $250 above the federal deduction, which is why TurboTax is asking again for your state taxes.

To clarify my understanding, can you use the same $250 for both or do you have to spend $500 for both the Federal tax deduction and state credit?
