Do you qualify for the Home Improvement Energy Efficient Credit?

  • This credit is a is a nonrefundable credit. This means in order to claim the credit you must have a tax liability to offset it.  If you do not have a tax liability equal to the credit the credit will be reduced to match your liability or down to $0.
  •  use it or lose it credit.  If you do have enough tax liability in the year you buy and install the item, you will not be able to carry the credit forward.
  • Doors, windows and insulation must be installed on your primary home.
  • The home must be in the US

If all of the above apply, then you can go back through and double check your answers to be sure that you answered them correctly.

yes I do qualify. I currently owe taxes so would appreciate being able to get the credit to help reduce the amount owed. There is no place for me to enter the amount that the heat pump cost. I am unable to edit anything on Form 5695. Help asap

This should allow you go get the energy credit.  The credit is limited to your tax liability, so if you have no tax liability, then you will not get any credit.  Keep all documentation that you were given about the heat pump that show that it is qualified for the tax credit as proof that you are eligible for claiming the credit.
