apparently, you are not self-employed. the car's sales tax as a major purchase and the general sales tax would be in lieu of state income tax deduction if you itemize (schedule A) for the year you bought the vehicle. under current tax laws your schedule A deduction for taxes can not exceed $10,000 ($5000 if married filing separate)
