Can I write off my car? I pay 500 a month to my employer for the lease. My employer pays my gas, maintenance, the auto title is in my employers name.

I also am able to use the car for personal use. I do have logs of my miles driven.

If this is an unreimbursed Job-Related Expense it can be deductible on your return. This type of deduction is calculated with Form 2106 to be Itemized in Schedule A. Please keep in mind that if the sum of itemized deductions in Schedule A does not exceed the amount of your Standard Deduction, Schedule A will not be beneficial to your return. Additionally, this type of deduction (Miscellaneous) is limited by the 2% of AGI rule. This rule states that only the amount of Miscellaneous Deductions that exceed 2% of your AGI are deductible on Schedule A.

Standard Deduction; Tax Year 2016

  • Single $6,300.00
  • Married Filing Joint or Qualified Widow(er) $12,600.00
  • Married Filing Separate $6,300.00
  • Head of Household $9300.00
  • Dependent $1,050.00

I have also attached a list of common itemized deductions to help you make a more informed decision on the election of your deduction.
