Can I write off expenses related to assisted living?

You may be able to deduct some of the fees paid for an assisted living facility, if part of those fees are for medical service.

Your facility should be able to give you a breakdown of what their fees are for - rent, meals, medical, etc.

The portion of the fees that are for medical services can be entered as a medical expense on Schedule A (Itemized Deductions).  Medical expenses are subject to a 10% of AGI floor (7.5% floor if you were born be3fore January 2,1952).

More information on medical expenses can be found in this IRS publication:  https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p502.pdf

Some states also allow a deduction for rent expenses.
