As the property buyer, you are responsible for, and can deduct, the property taxes that cover the period from the date of closing forward. You cannot deduct property taxes that cover the period prior to closing, because you did not own the property. The seller can deduct the portion of property taxes covering the period up to, but not including, the date of closing. You and the seller each are considered to have paid your own share of the taxes, even if one or the other paid the entire amount.
