Can i get a deductable for a hospital bill i paid for out of a settlement for a car accident i was involved in?

I was involved in a DUI accident where i was in the car (sober) with a drunk driver. My settlement was $15k but after lawyer expenses and hospital bills i recieved $5800. Am i able to get a deductible for the bills paid from the settlement?

Yes, If you itemize, you can deduct unreimbursed medical expenses on your federal return.  Your medical expense is deductible after the 10% income exclusion on Schedule A.
