What kind of error message is it?
Hello,
It just keeps taking me back to the entry telling me that my amount is not correct. I've adjusted the amount that goes into line 10B but nothing seems to satisfy the computer.
For 2020, Congress has changed tax law to permit the deduction of certain charitable contributions “above the line”, even if the taxpayer is taking the Standard Deduction otherwise. The new deduction will appear on line 10b on the 1040.
There are restrictions: the contribution must be in cash or cash-equivalent and it cannot exceed $300 for most filing statuses (exception: $150 for Married Filing Separate).
To enter this deduction, you must enter the charitable contributions as if you were going to itemize these contributions (do a Search (upper right) for charitable contributions and click on the jump-to result). Be sure to indicate that the contribution was “Money” or else TurboTax will not ask about it later.
Thanks closest answer. A Turbo Tax Specialist determined that there was a glitch in the program. It was promised to be fixed within 24 hours. 72 hours have elapsed and the glitch is still present. Attempting a work around so I can file and get it over.
I'm not sure what you have tried but delete the cash contributions completely in the "Deductions & Credits" tab using the "Charitable Donations" "Donations to Charity" topic.
After deleting the amounts click done all the way through the deductions interview clicking "Wrap Up Tax Breaks" or "Done with Tax Breaks" to trigger the updates.
Next, revisit the "Charitable Donations" topic and enter your cash donation up to $300. Click "done" through the deductions interview clicking "Wrap Up Tax Breaks" or "Done with Tax Breaks" to trigger the updates. Continue again to get to the page that gives you the choice for the Itemized or Standard deduction. Continue.
You should arrive at a page to verify the Charitable donation with the standard deduction. Verify and continue.
The error should clear now.
Thank you, RayW7!! I spent a lot of frustrating time trying to figure out what I did wrong on the charitable contributions for those filing the standard deductions. TurboTax never asked me to itemize the contributions, but kept telling me that I had a mistake (which I could not correct). When I followed your advice, it worked!!!!
