Can I deduct the sales tax on charitable donations?

We often purchase non food items for our chosen charities. In our state, these are taxible. E.g. Backpacks, coats, blankets. Can the sales tax be deducted?

If you buy a backpack for $10 + tax then the total donation is the $10 + tax.
