Are you a W-2 employee?

Can I deduct job-related expenses on my tax return?

Sorry---W-2 employees cannot deduct job-related expenses on a federal return.  Job-related expenses were eliminated as a federal deduction for W-2 employees by the tax laws that changed for 2018 and beyond.  Your state tax laws might be different in AL, AR, CA, HI, MN, NY or PA.

Can i deduct teacher organization fees?

It depends, as an educator K-12 you can deduct up to $300 in 2022 for eligible educator expenses.

Educator Expenses If you were an eligible educator in 2022, you can deduct on line 11 up to $300 of qualified expenses you paid in 2022. If you and your spouse are filing jointly and both of you were eligible educators, the maximum deduction is $600.

However, neither spouse can deduct more than $300 of their qualified expenses on line 11.

An eligible educator is a kindergarten through grade 12 teacher, instructor, counselor, principal, or aide who worked in a school for at least 900 hours during a school year. Qualified expenses include ordinary and necessary expenses paid: For professional development courses you have taken related to the curriculum you teach or to the students you teach; or

In connection with books, supplies, equipment (including computer equipment, software, and services), and other materials used in the classroom. An ordinary expense is one that is common and accepted in your educational field. A necessary expense is one that is helpful and appropriate for your profession as an educator. An expense doesn’t have to be required to be considered necessary.

You're an eligible educator if, for the tax year you're a kindergarten through grade 12 teacher, instructor, counselor, principal or aide for at least 900 hours a school year in a school that provides elementary or secondary education as determined under state law.

Qualified expenses are deductible only to the extent the amount of such expenses exceed the following amounts for the tax year:

  • The interest on series EE and I U.S. savings bonds that you exclude from income because you paid qualified higher education expenses,
  • Any distribution from a qualified state tuition program that you exclude from income,
  • Any tax-free withdrawals from your Coverdell education savings accounts,
  • Any reimbursements you receive for expenses that aren't reported to you in box 1 of your Form W-2.

For additional information regarding the deduction for certain expenses of an eligible educator, see the Instructions for Form 1040 (and Form 1040-SR)PDF or the Instructions for Form 1040-NRPDF.
