Can I deduct health care costs in 2019?

Tax year 2019, or your 2018 tax return that you file in 2019?
Public Law 115-97, the Tax Reform Act of 2017, enacted on December 22, 2017, changed the AGI threshold for medical expenses from 10% to 7.5% for tax years 2017 and 2018. By default, it reverts to 10% for tax year 2019.
State tax law may be different.

Medical expenses are deductible on your 2018 tax return as an itemized deduction on Schedule A.  Only the amount greater than 7.5% of your AGI can be deducted (the same as tax year 2017).

Your total itemized deductions must be greater than the standard deduction for your filing status to have any tax benefit.

Standard deductions for 2018

  • Single - $12,000 add $1,600 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Separately - $12,000 add $1,300 if age 65 or older
  • Married Filing Jointly - $24,000 add $1,300 for each spouse age 65 or older
  • Head of Household - $18,000 add $1,600 if age 65 or older
