I had a business trip at the end of December 2018 (airfare purchased in 2018), however I have some meal expanses from early 2019 related to the same trip. How would I treat them? Do I need to split expanses for both tax years?

No, you must deduct expenses in the year you paid them. You will need to split the expenses between the two tax years by claiming the portion you paid in that same tax year.
