Can I claim my child that is 19 and works

If the child is Not a full time student and has gross income in 2023 of $4,700 or more then no one can claim them as a dependent.

Can I claim my child that is 19 and works

It depends. If your 19 year-old is a student and meets the IRS requirements below, you will be able to claim your child as your qualifying child. Below you will find the basic qualifiers:

For a Qualifying child

  • They must be related to you.
  • They can't be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
  • They must be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • If they are married, they can't file a joint return with their spouse.
  • They must be under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
    • No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
  • They must have lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
  • They didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.

If your child doesn't meet the requirements as a qualifying child, they may meet the requirements as a qualifying relative, which are below:

For a Qualifying relative

  • They must be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
  • · They must have lived with you all year
  • · They had to make less than $4,700 last year
  • · You must have provided more than half of your child's total support

Review the TurboTax Help article Who can I claim as my dependent?

If you are able to claim you child as a dependent and your child files a tax return, make sure that he/she indicates they can be claimed on someone else's tax return. Review the instructions: How do I indicate that I can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return?
